Flowchart syntax you can try

Flowchart viewer sample

Inspect a decision with two labeled exits and a return path. Edit the condition or rename a step to see the flow update.

flowchart TD
  Start([Start]) --> Check{Requirements clear?}
  Check -->|Yes| Build[Build diagram]
  Check -->|No| Refine[Refine steps]
  Refine --> Check
  Build --> Export[Export flowchart]
  • Keep a stable node ID when changing a visible label.
  • Label both decision exits so the return path has a clear purpose.

Direction and readable node labels

A short left-to-right process for a README. Change LR to TD when a vertical diagram fits your document better.

flowchart LR
  Source["Read source"] --> Review["Review changes"]
  Review --> Ready(["Ready to publish"])
  • Use square brackets for process steps and rounded ends for start or finish points.
  • Quote labels containing punctuation; node IDs can stay short.

A decision with explicit outcomes

Check whether an upload is accepted or rejected. Each outcome ends in its own step, making the boundary easy to inspect.

flowchart TD
  Upload["Receive upload"] --> Size{"Within size limit?"}
  Size -->|Yes| Accept["Accept file"]
  Size -->|No| Reject["Show size limit"]
  • Curly braces create a decision node.
  • Text between vertical bars labels an edge; it does not add another node.

Syntax quick reference

Mermaid syntax and its meaning
SyntaxMeaning
flowchart TD / LRSet top-to-bottom or left-to-right direction.
A[Label]Give node A a visible process label.
B{Question?}Draw a decision.
A -->|Yes| BConnect two nodes with a labeled arrow.
subgraph Group ... endGroup related steps; close the group with end.

Before you share the diagram

  • Use different IDs for different steps; reusing an ID reconnects the same node.
  • If the parser stops at a label, quote it and check brackets. Avoid lowercase end as an unquoted node name.
  • The full editor’s spacing presets affect flowcharts. Direction remains part of your diagram code.
